I am currently on a flight from Juneau Alaska to Portland Oregon, my home state.

My fear of heights is nearly debilitating. The word nearly is critical in this context. In fact, I am so afraid of heights that I won’t climb onto a chair to change a burned out light bulb (although I would if I could not find someone else who was willing to do it for me. I might pass out doing it, but when I came to, I would climb onto the chair again, and keep doing it until the bulb was changed). I use the term ‘nearly’ because I do not allow my fear of heights to stop me from living my life fully.

Very few people know how to connect with or talk to someone who has lost someone very close to them to suicide. In the last ten years, I’ve lost two loved ones to suicide.

My father died on October 2nd approximately ten years ago. I could look up the year but it’s painful enough to deal with the date each year; it won’t help me to also have five and ten-year anniversaries on my mind. He suffocated himself to death with a helium tank. To this day I feel a sting when I see party balloons.

Ten years ago my dad killed himself and changed my life and the lives of everyone who loved him. When he died, I felt isolated in my grief. I wasn’t the only person who loved him, but my relationship with him was different than the relationships he had with other people. Every person he left behind felt differently about him. While we could comfort each other to some extent, it felt like we were all alone, each of us in our own private world of pain.
